The alluring scents will tantalize your senses, preparing your taste buds for an unforgettable culinary adventure featuring quesillo, grasshoppers, ice cream, and a chocolate grinding tasting experience.
To mark our arrival in Oaxaca, we'll gather for a special Welcome Dinner, embracing the start of our journey in this captivating destination. (Dinner provided) |
DAY 2: Immersing in Oaxaca's TraditionsToday, we dive into Oaxaca’s rich artistic heritage and Day of the Dead customs. The morning begins with a visit to a local alebrijes studio, where we learn about the intricate process of carving and painting these vibrant mythical creatures. As we explore the studio, we'll enjoy hot chocolate and pan de muerto, a delicious traditional treat during Día de los Muertos. Each woman in the group will have the opportunity to paint her own alebrije to take home—a special keepsake from this magical journey.
Next, we head to a pottery demonstration, discovering the region’s traditional clay techniques from skilled artisans. We then explore the art of Zapotec weaving, watching master weavers create stunning textiles using natural dyes. Afterward, we enjoy a tortilla-making class where we’ll learn how to craft this essential part of Oaxacan cuisine, followed by a mezcal tasting to experience the flavors of this iconic Oaxacan spirit. As night falls, we experience the heart of Día de los Muertos with an evening cemetery visit, where families honor their loved ones with candles, marigolds, and heartfelt ofrendas, immersing us in the soul-stirring beauty of this sacred tradition. DAY 3: Tradition, Art and RemembranceWe start the day with a morning cemetery visit in Tlacolula, where we experience the local customs of Día de los Muertos as families honor their loved ones with offerings and vibrant decorations. Afterward, we head to the home of a family whose mastery of red clay pottery has been passed down for generations. We’ll witness a live demonstration, gaining insight into the techniques and traditions that preserve this ancient art form. The ladies will also have the opportunity to create their own clay piece, shaping and molding the rich red earth into a personal keepsake. There will also be time to purchase handcrafted artifacts and socialize with the women of the family, sharing stories and traditions.
Next, we enjoy a traditional mole lunch, savoring the deep, rich flavors of one of Oaxaca’s most beloved dishes. In the afternoon, we visit an altar at the host family's home, a beautiful tribute to their ancestors, where we learn about the significance of the offerings and rituals. We then join the family in a heartfelt cemetery visit at their own cemetery, where we offer flowers and pay respects to those who have passed, embracing the deep sense of connection and remembrance that defines Día de los Muertos. Then, it’s time for some dress-up fun as we embrace the festive spirit by donning costumes and masks—available to borrow or bring your own. The night continues with a warm welcome at our host family's mezcal distillery, where we enjoy a live band and sip on a complimentary mezcal and a custom-crafted cocktail. Additional mezcal cocktails are available for purchase. We’ll join the local Zapotec community for a lively Comparsa Parade, led by a traditional Oaxacan live band, visiting various stops around town.
